About Elizabeth

Elizabeth Photo

I was born and raised in the suburbs of New York, and currently live in New Jersey farm country, with my husband and two cats.

I have a graduate degree in Chemistry (of all things).  I worked for years in labs and then in lovely orange cubicles, reviewing studies performed to meet environmental, and then pharmaceutical regulations.  I realized pretty early on that chemistry wasn’t my “calling” (although it did pay the rent), and started writing on the side to keep myself happy.  Elizabeth PhotoThe more time I spent writing the more addicted I got to it, creating characters and worlds, getting inside characters’ heads to understand their personality, and learn how they’ll react to the trials I’m putting them through–and yes, I know they’re not real, but while I’m writing them they feel as real as my own friends and family members.

I work best in the mornings, usually starting by 6AM. After that, it depends on the day.  There are some days I can work 12 hours non-stop (16 hours, 7 days a week when I was working on Promise the Moon!), and others I’ll struggle for 4 hours and then finally give up and read someone else’s work, looking for inspiration.  I never know where a story will end up when it starts; it Elizabeth Signingreally almost feels like the book writes itself, the characters telling me what happened in their lives and how they feel about it.  I’m lucky to have an extremely accommodating husband, who both understands when I spend weekends with my nose in my notebooks, and is willing to be my first (and second and third) reader, often even helping me construct subplots.

Elizabeth PhotoI’m currently at work on my next novel, which will be published by Bantam in the summer of 2009.
